Forestry Mulching Cost Estimator
Get a line-item forestry mulching cost estimate based on national averages and per-acre rates. Includes clearing, mobilization, and stump treatment with range pricing. Use it to budget a job or to price one as a contractor.
The math, shown transparently
No black box. Here is exactly what the calculator computes. (Source: HomeAdvisor 2024, ForestryForum contractor surveys)
// Clearing cost: base rate adjusted for terrain
clearing = base_rate x terrain_multiplier x acreage
// Mobilization: flat fee for equipment transport
mobilization = $500 flat (mid estimate, range $300-$800)
// Stump treatment: herbicide to prevent regrowth
stump_treatment = $200/acre x acreage
// Total with all line items
total = clearing + mobilization + stump_treatment
Worked example
5 acres, medium brush, rolling terrain, with mobilization and stump treatment:
base_rate = $2,800 (medium brush)
terrain = 1.15 (rolling)
per_acre = $2,800 x 1.15 = $3,220/ac
clearing = 5 x $3,220 = $16,100
mobilization = $500
stump_treat = 5 x $200 = $1,000
total = $16,100 + $500 + $1,000 = $17,600
Forestry mulching rates per acre
These are typical mulching-only rates by vegetation density. Mobilization, stump treatment, and hauling are billed on top. Steep or rocky terrain and high-cost regions push the rate toward the upper end.
| Vegetation | Rate per acre |
|---|---|
| Light brush / saplings | $1,000–$2,000 |
| Medium brush | $2,000–$3,500 |
| Heavy brush / small trees | $3,500–$5,500 |
| Dense hardwood / mature trees | $4,500–$5,500 |

What goes into a mulching bid
Every mulching bid should have at least four line items. Clearing is the acreage times your rate. Mobilization covers getting your rig to the site and back. Stump treatment is for grinding or treating stumps left after clearing. Some jobs also need hauling for material that cannot be mulched in place.
Separating the line items makes the bid transparent and lets you adjust scope without renegotiating the whole price. A landowner who sees "clearing: $16,100, mobilization: $500, stump treatment: $1,000" trusts the number more than a single lump sum of $17,600.
The terrain multiplier matters more than most operators realize. Rolling ground adds 15% because the machine works harder on every pass. Steep ground adds 35%. If you bid flat-rate on a hilly property, you eat that cost difference out of your margin.
Frequently asked questions
How much does forestry mulching cost?
Forestry mulching costs $1,000-$5,500 per acre depending on vegetation density and terrain. Light brush runs $1,000-$2,000 per acre, while dense hardwood can cost $4,500-$5,500 per acre. Mulching suits stems up to about 10 inches; larger trees push you into full land clearing. These are mulching-only costs. Add $300-$800 for mobilization and $100-$300 per acre for stump treatment if needed.
Is forestry mulching cheaper than traditional clearing?
Yes. Forestry mulching eliminates hauling costs, dump fees, topsoil replacement, and erosion control. For a typical job, mulching costs 30-50% less than bulldoze-and-haul when you include all hidden costs. Mulching also leaves ground cover in place, which reduces erosion and eliminates the need for restoration work.
What is mobilization and why does it cost extra?
Mobilization is the cost of transporting heavy equipment to and from your job site. A forestry mulcher on a lowboy trailer requires a CDL driver, fuel for the tow vehicle, and sometimes an oversize load permit. Typical mobilization fees range from $300 to $800 depending on distance.
Do I need stump treatment after mulching?
It depends. Forestry mulching grinds vegetation at or near ground level but does not remove root systems. Some species (like privet, kudzu, or willow) will regrow from the roots. Herbicide stump treatment prevents regrowth and costs $100-$300 per acre. If you are clearing for construction, stump treatment is usually unnecessary since the building pad will be excavated.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump treatment?
They solve different problems. Stump treatment is a herbicide applied to cut stumps to stop them regrowing, and runs $100-$300 per acre. Stump grinding is mechanical: a grinder chews the stump down several inches below grade so the ground can be replanted, paved, or built on. Grinding is the better choice when you need a clean, usable surface, and the tool prices it at roughly $250-$650 per acre on top of mulching.
When should I add debris hauling or grading?
Forestry mulching leaves the chips on site as ground cover, so most jobs need no hauling. Add debris hauling when the material has to leave the property, such as a tight residential lot or a build site. The tool counts loads based on vegetation density at $300-$600 per load. Add rough grading and site prep ($2,000-$6,000 per acre) when you need a rough-graded, smoothed surface for construction rather than mulched-in-place ground.
What are typical forestry mulching rates per acre?
Forestry mulching rates run about $1,000 to $2,000 per acre for light brush, $2,000 to $3,500 for medium brush, $3,500 to $5,500 for heavy brush and small trees, and $4,500 to $5,500 for dense hardwood. Rates rise on steep or rocky terrain and in higher-cost regions. Most contractors also add $300 to $800 for mobilization on top of the per-acre rate.
How do I price a forestry mulching job?
Price a mulching job by estimating the acreage, picking a per-acre rate that matches the vegetation and terrain, then adding mobilization, stump treatment, and any hauling as separate line items. Sanity-check the per-acre rate against your own cost: divide your crew day rate by the acres you can clear in a day. If that leaves you under your target margin, raise the rate rather than work more hours. The estimator above builds the line items for you.
Is forestry mulching priced per acre or per cubic yard?
Forestry mulching is priced per acre, or sometimes per hour, not per cubic yard. Per-cubic-yard pricing applies to landscape mulch you buy and spread, which runs about $20 to $50 per yard delivered. Forestry mulching grinds standing brush and trees in place and leaves the chips on site, so there is no separate material to buy or haul away.
