What It Really Costs to Run a Forestry Mulcher Per Hour

Most operators price off the contractor down the road, who might be losing money. Here is how to find your own number, with a real rig and every line of math shown.

Two buckets: owning and operating

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has costed construction equipment the same way for decades. Their schedule, EP 1110-1-8, splits every machine into two buckets. Owning costs hit you whether the machine runs or sits: depreciation, the cost of money on what you financed, insurance, and taxes. Operating costs only show up when the engine is on: fuel, repairs and maintenance, and wear parts.

The split matters because owning costs are a bill you pay per hour of expected life, while operating costs are a bill you pay per hour of actual work. Divide both by honest billable hours and you get a cost per productive hour. That number is the floor under every quote you write.

A real machine: Bobcat T770 with a Fecon head

Say you paid $110,000 for the T770 and head together, put 10% down, financed the rest at 7%, and expect 5,000 hours of life. Insurance runs $4,000 a year. You burn 5 gallons an hour at $4 a gallon, chew through 2 carbide teeth an hour at $22 each, and budget 8% of the purchase price a year for repairs. You bill 120 productive hours a month.

Look at the teeth line. At $44 an hour it beats fuel, beats the payment, beats everything. Rocky ground can double it. This is why two operators with identical machines can have wildly different costs, and why tracking teeth per hour on every job pays for itself.

Put a $45 an hour operator in the seat and the wage alone takes you to $144.70. That is the neighborhood of the break-even numbers operators post online for this class of rig, and the math checks out. But a wage is not what a seat costs. Payroll tax, workers comp, and benefits add 25 to 40% in construction trades, and clearing work carries some of the steepest comp rates there are. At a 30% burden the operator costs $58.50 an hour, and machine plus operator runs $158.20.

The machine is not the whole rig

The mulcher gets to the job on a truck and trailer that you also bought, financed, insure, and repair. Run the same owning and operating math on a $78,000 one-ton diesel and an $18,500 gooseneck, keep the 30% payroll burden on the wage, and give every billable hour its share of a modest $1,500 a month in overhead. Now the picture is honest:

Every hour billed under $191.94 loses money on this rig. The $92 gap between the machine-only number and the real one explains a lot of busted land clearing businesses.

What to actually charge

Break-even is a floor, not a rate. Downtime, warranty work, a blown hydraulic line, and slow winters all come out of margin. Most established contractors target 30 to 50% gross margin. The formula is rate = break-even / (1 - margin). At 30% on this rig that is $274.20 an hour, with $82.26 of real profit built into every hour.

If the market in your area will not pay that, you now know something specific instead of something vague. Either your utilization is too low (more billable hours shrink every fixed cost per hour), your costs are out of line, or the market is telling you to price by the acre and win on production instead.

Why do mulching rates vary so much between contractors?

Because costs vary. Utilization is the big one: every fixed dollar gets divided by billable hours, so an operator billing 60 hours a month carries twice the fixed cost per hour of one billing 120. Financing, insurance, rock content, and how honestly overhead gets counted do the rest. The market rate tells you what others charge, not what you can afford.
